# Change the Access Level of a Chatter Group

Edit a Chatter group’s settings to change its access level. For example, you open up an unlisted group to a wider audience by converting it to a private or public group. You can edit the settings for Chatter groups that you own or manage.

      </table>

As a group owner or manager, you can change groups from private to public, or from public to private by [editing the group settings](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=experience.collab_group_editing.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "To change a Chatter group’s owner, edit group settings. Only the current group owner and people with the Modify All Data permission can change the owner.").

When you change a private group to public, a few things happen:

- Updates and files are visible to all users.
- All pending requests to join the group are accepted.
- Anyone can join the group.

Private groups with customers can’t be converted to other group types. You can't change the group access level for private groups that allow customers.

1. In Salesforce Classic, click **Group Settings** on the group detail page. In the Lightning Experience, click the **Edit Group** button in the group header.
2. Change the access level for the group.
3. Save your changes.
