# Mention People and Groups in Chatter

A great way to get someone’s attention or to share a post with a group is to mention them.

Note To get the best performance, access checks for mentions occur after you select a name. If the check fails, a message tells you that the mentioned user can't see the update: \[_Name_\] doesn't have access and won't see this update. The mention becomes a link. When you have access to the mentioned person, the link is to that person's profile. When you don't have access—for example, when the user is an external user—the link is to the person's user record detail page. In either case, the mention doesn't trigger a notification for the mentioned person.
