Get answers to frequently asked questions about Point of Sale (POS) offline support.
If using both Wi-Fi and cellular connections, are there any steps needed to avoid issues?
Yes, customers using both Wi-Fi and cellular connections should make sure that their Cellular iPad can still connect to their Store LAN peripherals.
Is LTE backup or 3G recommended for the device?
We suggest using LTE backup for better reliability. Setting up a Cellular HotSpot with an LAN cable connection to the Wi-Fi router can establish continuous connectivity.
When discussing LAN components, do users need to use all physically connected or Bluetooth devices for dual connectivity?
Bluetooth connectivity isn't affected if the network goes down. However, if many peripherals use Bluetooth, it increases the failure rate due to interference. Moreover, relying solely on Bluetooth limits mobility, especially for nonfixed registers.
How is the associate able to log in to the register while it is in offline mode?
Associates can log in to the register in offline mode because their credentials are stored in the register's offline database. Since store associate credentials are not retrieved through a feed, the synchronization of the register's offline database occurs when an associate logs in while the register is online.
Is there a configuration to trigger offline mode based on poor network performance, aside from a complete WAN/LAN outage?
Currently, there is no automated configuration to trigger offline mode based on low or poor network performance. We recommend training associates to manually switch to offline mode if they notice slow performance or unexpected behavior in the system. This allows them to continue processing transactions without disruption.
