# Sales Reporting Glossary of Terms and Definitions

To understand sales data, use this glossary of terms commonly seen in sales and app reports in Point of Sale.

## Sales & Returns

 
| Term | Definition |
| --- | --- |
| Order Count | Number of sales or exchange orders completed |
| Units Sold | Number of items sold in sales and as part of exchanges |
| Units Sold per Order | Units Sold / Order Count |
| Gross Sales | Product price × quantity (before tax, shipping, handling, and discounts or promotions) |
| Gross Revenue | Gross Sales + Taxes + Shipping − Discounts |
| Sales After Discounts | Gross Sales − Discounts |
| Refunds | Total amount refunded including tax, discounts, shipping (where applicable) |
| Refunds Excl. Tax | Amount refunded excluding tax, shipping, and handling when identified separately in the transaction |
| Net Sales | Gross Sales − Discounts − Refunds Excl. Tax |
| Net Revenue | Gross Revenue − Refunds |
| Average Order Value (AOV) | Sales After Discounts / Order Count |
| Revenue Per Order | Gross Revenue / Order Count |
| Non-Merch Sales | Sum of [Non-Merch](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=commerce.rt_pos_orders_custom_non_merchandise_sku.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "POS enables you to configure non-merchandise SKUs, such as postage stamps and gift certificates, to meet your business needs. You can also configure the checkout rules that apply to these items. Control if these items are discountable or taxable, and set other rules.") Sales |
| Exchange Sales | Total amount of sales present in an exchange |
| Refund Count | Number of total refunded orders (including return leg of an exchange) |
| Units Refunded | Number of items returned in all Refunds |
| Exchanges | Total amount of exchanges from refunds (tax included) |
| Net Refunds | Total amount the customer received from Refunds, after exchanges and new sales (refund sales − Exchange Sales) |

Note If configured, Point of Sale can process [store associate attributions](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=commerce.rt_cms_reports_sales_attribution_reports.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Measure sales associate performance, predict commissions, and get a summary of sales and returns attributed to each associate in Point of Sale CMS.") with a sales or returns order. The attribution-related terms in this table are Order Count, Refunds, Net Sales, Refunds Excl. Tax, and Sales After Discounts.
