# Set Up Scanning and Parsing Barcodes on POS App

Point of Sale's barcode scanning feature on the POS app lets you quickly input customer data, such as customer IDs, using the iPad camera or an external scanner. By creating a parsing rule in CMS, you can extract and display only the necessary information, streamlining the checkout process and enhancing customer service.

- Modern POS App Build: 10.3.1 or greater
- Platform Support: iPhone & iPad
- Offline Support: Yes

## Add Scanning to a Layout Field

1. In CMS, go to **Layouts** | **Layout Pages** and edit a layout.
2. Edit the cell in which you want to parse a barcode.
3. In the Form Element-TextField window, enable **Allow Barcode Input**.
4. In the Barcode Parsing Rules field, enter a regex to extract details from the barcode. For example, `(?<=sub=).*?(?=&)` matches any substring that comes after `sub=` and before `&`. In the URL `example.com?sub=12345&other=6789`, this regex will match `12345`.
5. Set and save your changes.

## Test Scanning

On the app, open the layout and tap the barcode icon next to the field. This will enable you to scan a barcode.

This example QR code extracts "12345" from the URL "example.com?sub=12345&other=6789" using the example regex from the steps. ![A QR code that represents the URL example.com?sub=12345&other=6789](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-commerce-retail-264-0-0-production-enus/17d647fb-8988-49fb-9add-c4f4cc79c9e4/retail/images/rt_cms_layouts_settings_barcode_scan_qr_example.png) After scanning, the app extracts the substring according to the regex configured in CMS and inputs the matched substring into the field.

Note If the regex parsing doesn't find the right values, it will return the entire string that was scanned.
