# Create Product Categories and Subcategories in a B2B Commerce Store

Organize products into categories and subcategories to enhance product discoverability. Providing a structure improves search and navigation, making it easier for customers to find what they’re looking for.

For information about designing a category structure, see [Plan Your Category Structure](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=commerce.comm_categories_structure.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Categories make products easier to discover in searches and through navigation. Build a category structure that shows product relationships and makes products easier to find. When you create a store, a default catalog with one Products category is assigned to the store.").

1. In the navigation sidebar, select a store from the Store dropdown.
2. Select **Merchandising** | **Categories**.
3. Click **New**.
4. Enter a name for the category and an optional description.
5. If you want this category to appear in a menu, select **Show In Menu**.

Category changes don’t take effect until you rebuild your search index.
6. If you’re creating a subcategory, search for and select its parent category.
7. Assign a sort order to the category or subcategory.

The sort order determines the order in which a category or subcategory appears on the navigation menu and in filters. Let's say you have three categories, Paint, Brushes, and Accessories, and you assign them 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Across the Multilevel Navigation Menu, Paint is listed first, Brushes second, and Accessories third. On results pages, the same order is used for results filters.
8. Enter a code to identify the category.
9. To assign products to the category, click **Assign**, select the products, and then click **Next**.
10. Click **Save**, or click **Save & New** to continue creating categories.

To add a bestseller category in the Search Input component, enter the corresponding category ID. You can find the category ID in the URL of the category record page between “CategoryPage” and “View.”
