# Swatch Images for B2C Commerce Variation Products

A swatch image shows the key difference between B2C Commerce variation products, such as color or fabric. Keep the swatch view type on the catalog, and assign one swatch image on the base product.

[Which Salesforce Commerce Product Do I Have?](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=commerce.comm_what_product.htm&language=en_US)

Define swatches for variation products. For example:

- For a _fabric_ variation attribute, a highly zoomed detail image of each fabric appears in a row beneath the product's image.
- For a _color_ variation attribute, a matrix of small colored images appears beneath the base product image. When the customer clicks a swatch (for example, "red"), the detail page for the "red" variation product appears.

Swatches appear as a special _view type_ together with image variants, and are maintained per base product. Typically, there's only one swatch image per view type and variation product. For example, products with the same color value, can have a different color tone. Swatches don't always represent color values. For example, a swatch can represent highly zoomed detail images of the fabric. In this case, the swatches for red T-shirts, red knit dresses, and red silk scarves are different. Representing a swatch as a view type lets every color variation product provide the required swatch image.

Add or keep the swatch view type in [Configure Catalog Image Settings in B2C Commerce](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=cc.b2c_configuring_variation_attributes_for_image_assignment.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "In B2C Commerce, configure catalog image settings only when the settings created with the catalog differ from what you want, or to add a catalog-level variation attribute. Default alt text and title fill in only when an image has none of its own, so you leave them unchanged before you assign images."), then assign one image to that view type in [Assign Images to Products in B2C Commerce](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=cc.b2c_managing_images.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "In B2C Commerce, attach an image to a product so the storefront can show it. Assign images on the base product, and a variation product uses those images."). Stacked swatch images are not allowed.
