# Customize Dashboard Widgets by Using Parameters

Use parameters to transform static widgets into versatile tools that adapt to various project requirements. By using parameters to drive widget behavior, you can repurpose a single visualization for different projects, regions, or time frames without rebuilding the underlying logic.

Note Parameters are created and stored in the semantic model. Make sure that you have the required user permissions outlined in the table.

1. Open the semantic model in your workspace.
2. Click **New** then select Parameter.
3. Enter a value for Parameter Name. API Name is automatically generated, but you can define your own.
4. Select a data type. The data type and parameter type depends on how you show a parameter on your dashboard. Review the table to ensure your parameter functions correctly.

    | Parameter Display | Data Type | Parameter Type |
    | --- | --- | --- |
    | List | Text, Number, Date, Boolean | List |
    | Toggle | Text, Number, Date | List |
    | Input | Text | Single Value |

Note Input is the default parameter display in the Show As widget property when a parameter is set for manual entry.
5. Select the parameter type.
6. Type in a default value.
7. Select the default display name if using a list widget.
8. Click **Save**.

- **[List Parameter Example](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_create_dashboard_parameters_list_example.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
You’ve been asked to create sales visualizations with several groupings, such as Region and Segment. You're going to reuse the existing visualization that you can update as grouping requirements change.
- **[Model Hypothetical Scenarios by Using Parameter Inputs](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_create_dashboard_parameters_input_example.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Enter text, numbers, or dates into parameter widgets for lookup and modeling hypothetical scenarios. Dashboard calculations update instantly by using your custom values rather than just existing data.
- **[Navigate Dashboards with Parameter Actions](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.tua_create_dashboard_parameters_action_example.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Parameter actions enable you to map visualization fields to parameters, transforming static charts into interactive navigation tools. This setup enables users to trigger dashboard updates by clicking data points, streamlining data exploration within a single interface.
