# Navigate Dashboards with Parameter Actions

Parameter actions enable you to map visualization fields to parameters, transforming static charts into interactive navigation tools. This setup enables users to trigger dashboard updates by clicking data points, streamlining data exploration within a single interface.

### Required Editions

In this example you're going to set up a parameter to return a value, units\_sold\_by\_region, when users click a visualization data point.

1. Create a parameter.
    1. Parameter Name: Quantity
    2. Data Type: **Number**
    3. Parameter Type: **Single Value**
    4. Default Value: 0
2. Create a calculated field for the parameter that contains logic for the units\_sold\_by\_region field.
3. Open the dashboard and add a parameter widget.

Important If you haven’t done so, create a visualization that contains the fields referenced in the calculated field logic.
4. Click **Add Parameter** and select your parameter.
5. Select a visualization then click the **Actions** tab.
6. Click **Add Action**, **Select Parameter**, then select your parameter.
7. Click **Field** and select units\_sold\_by\_region for the parameter widget to return.
8. Click **Done** and save your dashboard.
9. To see the units sold in the parameter, preview the dashboard and start clicking data points on the visualization.
