Dashboards are built with source reports, filters, and widgets

Source reports are reports that provide data for widgets. Each widget has one source report. Different widgets can have different source reports. The fields available for dashboard filters are the fields available in the objects that source reports are based on. Create source reports in the Report Builder.

Filters let dashboard readers refine the data they see in the dashboard to a particular view.

Widgets are the visual “blocks” of a dashboard. Each widget is a chart, gauge, metric, table, text, or image.

Note You can add the chart from a joined report as a dashboard widget, but you can’t add the full report. Filtering isn’t supported for widgets with a joined report chart.

Tip You can clone a dashboard to quickly create a dashboard with the same properties and widgets as the one you're viewing. Click **Save As** (or **Clone**), modify the dashboard settings, and save.

1. If necessary, create the source reports containing the data you want to display.

    ![Important](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-analytics-analytics-264-0-0-production-enus/295fead5-b71d-4e1c-9886-4af4d53400b6/images/icon_important.png)

Important Be sure to store these reports in folders that intended dashboard viewers can access.
2. On the Analytics tab, select **Create** | **Lightning** | **Dashboard**, or on the Dashboards tab, click **New Dashboard**.
3. Name the dashboard.

Optionally, provide a short description. Then, place the dashboard in a folder. Private Dashboards is the default folder.
4. To add a widget to the dashboard, click **\+ Widget**.
    1. Choose a source report for the widget, then click **Select**.

        ![Note](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-analytics-analytics-264-0-0-production-enus/295fead5-b71d-4e1c-9886-4af4d53400b6/images/icon_note.png)

Note In the Select Report window, report folders show only the reports they contain. Subfolders are not shown. To find reports in subfolders, use the search option in the All Folders list view, or return to the All Folders view, where all folders and subfolders appear in a single flat list.
    2. Customize how the widget displays data, then click **Add**.
    3. Arrange and resize the widget as necessary.
    4. To edit an existing widget, click ![the pencil icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-analytics-analytics-264-0-0-production-enus/295fead5-b71d-4e1c-9886-4af4d53400b6/analytics/images/pencil_lex.png). To remove a widget, click ![the remove component icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-analytics-analytics-264-0-0-production-enus/295fead5-b71d-4e1c-9886-4af4d53400b6/analytics/images/rd/rd_button_x.png).
5. To add a filter to the dashboard, click **\+ Filter**.
    1. From the Field dropdown, select a field to filter on. The dropdown shows fields that can be used to filter all the dashboard’s widgets. If there are equivalent fields for your selection, hover over ![the info icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-analytics-analytics-264-0-0-production-enus/295fead5-b71d-4e1c-9886-4af4d53400b6/analytics/images/rd/rd_icon_info.png) to see them.
    2. Give the filter a display name to identify it. If the filter has many equivalent fields, consider using a name that works for all widgets.
    3. Assign values to the filter by clicking **Add Filter Value**.
6. To specify who people view the dashboard as, click ![the gear icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-analytics-analytics-264-0-0-production-enus/295fead5-b71d-4e1c-9886-4af4d53400b6/analytics/images/rd/rd_settings_gear.png) to open the Properties menu.
    1. Under Name, optionally rename the dashboard.
    2. Under Description, optionally describe the dashboard.
    3. Under Folder, optionally move the dashboard into another folder. Click **Select Folder**, navigate to the new folder, and then click **Select Folder**.
    4. Under View Dashboard As, choose who people view the dashboard (and all source reports) as. People could see more or less data than they normally see elsewhere in Salesforce. Be careful not to reveal sensitive information to too broad an audience.
    5. Click **Save**.
7. To customize dashboard theme or color palette, open the Properties menu by clicking ![the gear icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-analytics-analytics-264-0-0-production-enus/295fead5-b71d-4e1c-9886-4af4d53400b6/analytics/images/rd/rd_settings_gear.png).

Customize colors in your dashboard by choosing a light or dark theme and one of 14 color palettes. Themes and color palettes help you organize and curate data in your dashboard. For example, highlight a set of summary metrics by giving them a dark theme and setting them against a light-themed dashboard.

    1. From Dashboard Theme, choose **Light** or **Dark** to set the theme for the entire dashboard. To set a single widget’s theme, edit the widget by clicking ![the pencil icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-analytics-analytics-264-0-0-production-enus/295fead5-b71d-4e1c-9886-4af4d53400b6/analytics/images/pencil_lex.png).
    2. From Dashboard Palette, choose one of 14 color palettes. **Wildflowers** is the default color palette. If you need an accessible color palette, choose **Mineral**.
    3. Click **Save**.
8. To switch between a 12-column and 9-column layout, open the Properties menu by clicking ![the gear icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-analytics-analytics-264-0-0-production-enus/295fead5-b71d-4e1c-9886-4af4d53400b6/analytics/images/rd/rd_settings_gear.png).
    1. Under Dashboard Grid Size, choose **12 columns** or **9 columns**.
    2. Click **Save**.
9. Click **Save**, then click **Done**.

Your dashboard is done. Review and admire your handiwork!

- **[Edit and Customize Lightning Experience Dashboard Widgets](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.dashboards_components_edit_lex.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Get your Lightning Experience dashboard widgets to show exactly what you want.
- **[Sort Data in Dashboard Widgets](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.dashboards_two_level_sorting.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Sort dashboard widgets by groups and measures. Sort ascending or descending. Dashboard widgets support two-level sorting. So you can sort by Stage and then by Sum of Amount, or by Average Age and then Record Count.
- **[Color Dashboard Data with Themes and Palettes](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.dashboards_color_theme.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Customize the colors in your dashboard by choosing a light or dark theme and one of 14 color palettes. Themes and color palettes help you organize and curate data in your dashboard. For example, highlight a set of summary metrics by giving them a dark theme and setting them against a light-themed dashboard.
- **[Add a Report to a Dashboard from the Report](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.dashboards_add_report_from_report.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Reading a report that you would like to add to a dashboard? Go from report to dashboard with only a few clicks!
- **[Add Custom Lightning Web Components to Lightning Dashboards](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.dashboards_embed_lwcs.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Use custom Lightning Web Components (LWCs) in Lightning dashboards to add meaningful visual context and support new use cases. Custom LWCs provide interactive, real-time data views that go beyond standard dashboard capabilities. For example, you can add an LWC to display a waterfall chart, which isn’t available in standard dashboard components.
- **[Use Source Report Charts in Dashboard Widgets](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.dashboards_use_report_chart.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
You’ve already charted data just the way you like in a report. Instead of re-creating the chart, use it in a dashboard widget.
- **[Show Tabular Information with a Lightning Table](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.dashboards_tables_group_measure_data.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Show up to 200 records and 10 columns and from any field in a source report’s report type. After grouping data in a Lightning table, you can add measures (sum, average, minimum, and maximum) to the grouped data. If a Lightning table's source report has a summary formula column, then you can show it on the Lightning table.
- **[Set Decimal Places for Numbers in Dashboard Charts, Tables, and Metrics](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.dashboards_set_decimal_places.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Because 14.11B is greater than 14B and the difference between 90%, 90.1%, and 90.10001% matters, choose how many decimal places appear after numbers in dashboard widgets.
- **[Set the Axis Range for a Dashboard Chart](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.dashboards_set_axis_range.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Choose the range of the x- and y-axes on dashboard charts, or let Salesforce automatically set them.
- **[Switch Between a 12- or 9-Column Dashboard Layout](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.dashboards_12_or_9_columns.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Both the 12-column and 9-column dashboard gives you plenty of room to lay out data in easy-to-consume ways.
- **[Edit Dashboards with Keyboard Shortcuts in Lightning Experience](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.dashboards_edit_lex.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
From the Dashboard tab, you can create, edit, or delete a dashboard using nothing but your keyboard. Use keystrokes to edit dashboards quickly and easily in Lightning Experience.
