# Parameters in Tableau Semantics

A parameter is a variable, such as a number, date, or string, that can replace a constant value in a calculated field and can be used in other functions, such as filtering.

**Use Case**: Create a calculated field that returns True if sales are greater than $500,000. You can replace the constant value of 500,000 in the formula with a parameter. Then, using the parameter control, you can dynamically change the threshold in your calculation.

- **[Create a Parameter](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.c360_a_sl_param_create.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
You can create a new parameter directly from your semantic model.
- **[Edit a Parameter](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.c360_a_sl_param_edit.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
You can edit any parameter in your semantic model.
- **[Delete a Parameter](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.c360_a_sl_param_delete.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
You can delete any parameter from your semantic model.
- **[Use Parameters in Calculated Fields](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.c360_a_sl_param_use_in_calc_field.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
You can use parameters within the formula field when creating and editing calculated fields. You can either insert the parameter or when creating the formula use auto-suggestion. The formula automatically includes parameters when suggesting fields.
