# Limitations for Document Text, Picklists, and Restricted Fields

Limits for searching document text, sorting picklists, and searching objects with hidden fields can impact search results.

## Documents

You can search document text using the global search bar and Chatter feed search, but there are some limitations on document type and file size. For supported document types, the first 1,000,000 characters of text are searched. If a file exceeds that character maximum, the text beyond this limit within the file isn’t searched. The file name, description, type, and owner fields are always searched.

For .csv files, if your file contains comma-separated content without whitespace (ex. "aaa, bbb, ccc"), the string doesn’t break up properly when it indexes. And when you search for individual items in your file, you don't get the right result. To get better results, consider using a different delimiter such as a semi-colon.

| File Type | File Extensions | Maximum Size |
| --- | --- | --- |
| HTML (only the text within a `<body>` tag) | .htm, .html, .xhtml | 5 MB |
| PDF | .pdf | 25 MB |
| PPT | .ppt, .pptx, .pptm | 25 MB |
| RTF | .rtf | 5 MB |
| Text | .c, .cpp, .css.csv, .ini, .java, .log, .sql, .txt | 5 MB |
| Word | .doc, .docs,.docm | 25 MB |
| XLS | .xls, .xlsx..xlsm | 5 MB, or a maximum cell limit of 100,000 cells |
| XML | .xml | 5 MB |

## Sorting Picklists

On the search results page, you can’t select column headings to sort multi-select picklist fields because that field type can’t be sorted.

## Search for Objects with Restricted Field Access

Search doesn’t return results for records with fields protected by field level security. For example, an Admin or end-user searches for Las Vegas in Accounts. The Account fields Billing Address and Shipping Address are protected by field level security. Salesforce does a keyword search, matching the terms Las Vegas, Las, and Vegas in the searchable fields. No results are returned for records that match only the Billing Address and Shipping Address fields. These fields are protected so access to them is restricted.

Note In some rare situations, when search terms match field values protected by field-level security, the associated records are returned, but without the protected fields and their values.
