# Manage the Search Index

View default searchable fields. You can add and remove fields in the search index. For example, if you never want to include certain custom fields in search, remove those fields. Removed fields don’t appear in search results and aren’t used to match results. You can’t remove standard fields.

If a field contains sensitive information and you couldn’t apply field-level security to it, remove the field from the index. Unprotected fields don’t have a ![Shield icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-ai-search-264-0-0-production-enus/6a28c936-3b68-4186-bc09-7ab905f33ef3/search/images/shield_60.png) in the Field-Level Security column. You can add fields back later.

1. From Setup, in the Quick Find box, enter Search Manager, and then select **Index Management**.
2. In the Salesforce Objects list, select the object that has the fields that you want to add or remove.
3. From the dropdown next to the field, select **Remove from search index** or **Add to search index**.
4. Click **Confirm**.
5. Save your changes.

Your changes can take a few hours. You can modify a field after it’s updated.
