Agent Script in Multi-Agent Solutions

Implement determinism in your multi-agent solution by using Agent Script and these design patterns.

Basic Agent Script Use in a Multi-Agent Solution

This example shows these Agent Script techniques (for Supervisor Mode):

  • The start_agent agent_router section models agents as tools available for its reasoning. Connected subagents are routed through the graph-based reasoner, which eliminates reliance on if-else instructions. Because agents are modeled as actions, you can add conditions in the script to call a specific agent.
  • When you Connect an Agent as a Subagent, the system adds the connected_subagent block automatically.
  • You can use the Canvas view to add If/Else blocks and run an agent by typing @ to select it under the Actions menu item.
  • The connected_subagent CRM_Agent section passes context between agents (end-user language and the current record ID). You can deterministically map context between agents by using the inputs block in each connected sub agent.
    inputs:
       EndUserLanguage: string = @variables.EndUserLanguage
       currentRecordId: string = @variables.currentRecordId

Orchestrator Agent Routing to Connected Subagents

There are two main orchestrator routing patterns in Agentforce multi-agent solutions: handoff and supervisor mode. For an overview, see "Handoff and Supervisor Modes" in Multi-Agent Orchestration.

Handoff Mode - Delegate Control to a Connected Subagent

By default, an orchestrator agent hands off control to a connected subagent, which then manages subsequent interactions with the user directly. When you Connect an Agent as a Subagent, the system adds these script elements in the start_agent agent_router block:

  • model_config with the hyperclassifier
  • transition via @utils.transition to the connected subagent
start_agent agent_router:
    model_config:
        model: "model://sfdc_ai__DefaultEinsteinHyperClassifier"
    reasoning:
        actions:
            go_to_crm: @utils.transition to @connected_subagent.CRM_Agent

Supervisor Mode - Call a Connected Subagent as a Tool

In this pattern, the orchestrator agent is solely responsible for managing conversations directly with users.

  • It delegates a task to the connected subagent.
  • Next, it gathers and synthesizes responses from one or more connected subagents.
  • Then it communicates the result to the user.
start_agent agent_router:
    model_config:
    reasoning:
        actions:
            crm_agent: @connected_subagent.CRM_Agent

Comparison Between Routing Modes

  Supervision Mode Handoff Mode
Classifier Default reasoner

HyperClassifier preferred:

model_config:
    model1://sfdc_ai_DefaultEinsteinHyperClassifier
Agent Script keyword @connected_subagent.X @utils.transition to @connected_subagent.X
Who responds to user Orchestrator (synthesizes) Orchestrator first, then the connected subagent (directly). The next turn is the orchestrator again.
Latency Higher (extra LLM call to synthesize results) Lower
Post-response chaining Not applicable. The orchestrator stays in control. after_response block on the connected subagent
Router determinism If/Else + invoke in Script view Transition is the routing mechanism itself
Variable mapping inputs: block on connected_subagent inputs: block + after_response set
Can call multiple agents per turn Yes No. One handoff per turn.

Transition from a Connected Subagent to Another Node

In handoff mode, optionally use after_response for a connected subagent’s post-reply chaining. After a connected subagent completes its task and replies to the user, after_response can delegate control to another agent. The block is deterministic (no LLM model call) and exists only for connected subagents. (Internal subagents use after_reasoning instead).

An after_response block offers these options:

  • transition - chain to the next agent
  • if/then (conditional) - branch on outcome
  • set - set a variable for the pipeline
Note
Note After the transition occurs, any subsequent script is skipped (not evaluated). For example, you can't set a variable after a handoff transition.
Pattern Description Agent Script Example
Always chain

This pattern is unconditional. It fires every time. Use it for mandatory next steps, such as notifications.

On the router, model_config must specify the HyperClassifier (model1://sfdc_ai_DefaultEinsteinHyperClassifier). That model reads the connected subagent's description to route, so write the description like a function signature with explicit scope. Without the HyperClassifier, handoff doesn’t work correctly.

after_response:
   transition to @connected_subagent.EmailAgent
Conditional chain

The next agent runs only if a variable is true. In this common pattern, you check one variable, then decide whether to chain.

after_response:
   if @variables.email_needed:
      transition to @connected_subagent.EmailAgent
Multi-branch

Several possible next agents. The system checks each if condition independently. The first matching condition runs. Use this approach to branch a multi-agent flow.

after_response:
   if @variables.email_needed:
      transition to @connected_subagent.EmailAgent
   if @variables.slack_needed:
      transition to @connected_subagent.SlackAgent
Set the state, then chain

The next agent needs data from this one. Set variables before transition to. Any Agent Script written after the transition is silently ignored. Transition is the last thing that runs.

The next agent receives those values only through its inputs block. Context doesn’t flow automatically. Missing inputs mapping is the usual dataflow error.

after_response:
   set @variables.done = true
   transition to @connected_subagent.EmailAgent
Pipeline

A sequential workflow across multiple independent connected subagents. Each agent's after_response chains to the next. Variables plus inputs mapping are the only thread connecting them.

after_response:
   set @variables.step = "billing"
   transition to @connected_subagent.BillingAgent

Escalate to a Human Representative

Use the delegate_escalation switch in a connected subagent to designate whether to escalate to a human representative from:

  • within a connected subagent (delegate_escalation: True), or
  • the orchestrator agent (unspecified, delegate_escalation: False, or when the orchestrator agent is in supervisor mode).
Handoff Scenario Escalation Reasons What Happens
Orchestrator Handoff
  • The user asked for a human while at the top-level menu.
  • The orchestrator reached a global instruction for escalation.
Runs the orchestrator's escalation flow
Specialized Handoff
  • The user asked for a human while deep in a specific subagent.
  • The connected subagent reached a policy for escalation.
Runs the connected subagent's escalation flow
Cascading Handoff
  • The connected subagent has no escalation routing defined.
  • The connected subagent has no escalation subagent.
Safely surfaces the request to the orchestrator routing logic
Exception Handoff
  • All human queues are offline.
  • The escalation flow fails.
  • An escalation flow isn't defined at the orchestrator level or at the connected subagent level.
Generates an AI fallback message

Example Escalation Implementation in Connected Subagent

connected_subagent Billing_Agent:
    target: "agent://Billing_Agent"
description: "Handles billing inquiries. Also handles escalation requests related"
    loading_text: "Consulting billing specialist..."
delegate_escalation: True # When escalating, use subagent's flow
    inputs:
        ...
subagent Escalation:
   label: "Escalation"
description: "Handles requests from users who want to transfer or escalate their conversation to a live human representative."
   reasoning:
       instructions: ->
           | If a user explicitly asks to transfer to a live agent, escalate the conversation.
If escalation to a live agent fails for any reason, acknowledge the issue and ask the user whether they would like to log a support case instead.
       # No reasoning actions in this subagent
