# Enable Agent Memory

Enable Agent Memory at the agent level so the agent can recall relevant details from your users' conversations and personalize future responses. Enabling memory applies to all of your agent's users, and for Agentforce Employee agents in Lightning Experience, each user then individually chooses whether to opt in.

### Required Editions

To use Agent Memory, your agent must use Agent Script in Agentforce Builder. Legacy agents don't support Agent Memory.

1. From the App Launcher, enter Agent, select **Agentforce Studio**, and click **Agents**.
2. Open the agent that you want to enable memory for, or [create a new agent](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ai.agent_setup_create.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Create intelligent, trusted, and customizable agents for your customers and employees.").
3. In Agentforce Builder, toggle to **Script** view.
4. In the Agent Script, add memory: enabled: True in the context block.

Agent Script autocompletes the property as you type. Values are case-sensitive. Use True or False.

![Agent Script showing the memory property set to enabled True in the context block.](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-ai-generative_ai-264-0-0-production-enus/f8ef6498-d7b2-44e3-9b34-ffd5a850aae9/generative_ai/images/agent_memory_enable_script.png)
5. Save your changes.
6. Start a preview conversation to validate that memory is retained across interactions.
7. Commit and [activate your agent](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ai.copilot_setup_activate_deactivate.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Activate your agent to make it available to your customers or employees. When an agent is deployed to one or more channels, including the Agentforce panel, activating the agent makes it immediately available to your users.").

Committed versions can't be edited. To make changes, create a new version. See [Versioning and Editing Agents](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ai.agent_versions_lifecycle.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Learn about the different states of agents as you create and iterate on your agents, including editable states and how to version your agent.").

To disable Agent Memory, set memory: enabled: False in the same context block, save, and commit a new version. When Agent Memory is disabled, the agent stops creating and using memories, and existing memories are preserved.

Agent Memory also depends on an org-level setting that is on by default. If your org turns off conversational memory, no agent creates or uses memories, even when memory is enabled in its Agent Script. See [Turn Off Conversational Memory for Your Org](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ai.agent_memory_toggle_conversation_memory.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Turn off conversational memory for all AI agents in your org at once, instead of one by one.").

For Agentforce Employee agents in Lightning Experience, users must also opt in before the agent begins creating memories for them. See [Manage Agent Access to Your Memories](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ai.agent_memory_manage_access.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Choose which agents can create memories from your conversations. Turning off access for an agent stops it from creating new memories, without deleting the ones it already created.").
