File upload capabilities are configured separately for the client and for the agent, so you can control which clients accept file uploads. For example, on Enhanced Chat v1 and v2, [the Let customers send files to service reps and AI agents setting](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=service.enhanced_chat_customer_file_types.htm&type=5&language=en_US) controls whether users can attach a file in the chat window.

When file uploads are disabled for the agent and not the client, the agent receives files and stores them. The files aren't used in the agent conversation or sent to the LLM. If you don't want your agent to receive and store files, turn off file upload capabilities for any clients your agent is connected to.

These controls limit file upload capabilities at the agent level.

- For an agent to receive file uploads, Data 360 must be enabled.
- If you don’t specify a mode and your agent can receive file uploads, `error` mode applies by default. When a user tries to attach a file, the agent sends a customizable error message.
- If your agent is in `auto` or `managed` mode and you haven't added explicit instructions that your agent can accept file uploads, your agent generally redirects the conversation to the Off Topic system subagent when it receives a file.

To turn off file uploads for your agent, modify your agent's script.

1. From the Agents list in the Agentforce Studio app, open the agent you no longer want to receive file uploads.
2. If you’re viewing the agent in Canvas view, switch to Script view.
3. In your agent's config block, add the `file_upload` field and specify a `mode` value of either `disabled` or `error`.

    - `disabled`—File uploads are turned off silently. If a user tries to attach a file, the upload fails and the conversation continues with no error message. The file is received and stored, but isn't used in the agent conversation or sent to the LLM.

        ```
        config:
            developer_name: "Support_Agent"
            agent_label: "Customer Support Agent"
            file_upload:
                mode: "disabled"
        ```
    - `error`—File uploads are turned off. If a user tries to attach a file, the agent sends an error message. Use the optional message field to define an error message. The file is received and stored, but isn't used in the agent conversation or sent to the LLM.

        ```
        config:
            developer_name: "Support_Agent"
            agent_label: "Customer Support Agent"
            file_upload:
                mode: "error"
                message: "Sorry, I can't accept files. Is there something else I can help you with?"
        ```
4. Save your changes.
5. To confirm that file uploads have been turned off for your agent, start a preview conversation in Agentforce Builder and attempt to send a file.
